Diner embodies Tenino spirit

The Old 99 Espresso and Diner offers something new in Tenino.

Helena Marsh, who owns DJ’s Country Market in Tenino, transformed a former espresso business into a cozy space offering espresso, fresh food and an ample taste of Tenino.

Everything about the diner is focused on Tenino, Marsh said. The menu items are named after Tenino streets and the walls are adorned with the faces of notable Tenino residents.

The diner serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with menu items like the “Sussex Ave. Scramble” and the “Sage St. Sandwich.”

The food is made from scratch. Burgers are hand-pressed and fixings like tomatoes or lettuce are prepared as menu items are ordered.

“You don’t leave hungry,” Marsh said.

People can grab food or drinks on the go via the diner’s drive-through window.

The idea to use the diner’s walls to celebrate Tenino’s finest was sparked by a mural painted on the wall, said Marsh. The mural, which depicted Tenino’s history, was painted over and Marsh decided they needed a new way to celebrate the town.

Dexter Eddins, the late arm-wrestling champion from Tenino, was the first to be honored at the diner, said Marsh. She has a photo of him waiting to be framed and hung on the wall.

Country music performer Adam Craig, who is from Tenino, also graces the walls.

Craig has written a song about Tenino called “Church Pew or Bar Stool” recorded by Jason Aldean. A church pew sits near the entrance to the diner, and a bar stool will soon join it, said Marsh.

The spirit behind the diner is to always keep the focus on Tenino, said Marsh.

“I want to encourage people to eat local, shop local and most of all, I would like to see people realize that Tenino is more than just a town that you pass through,” she said.

Nick & Helena Marsh owners of DJ's Country Market will take possession of what was formally known as "Rockabillies" at the corner of Old Hwy 99 and Sussex Ave in downtown Tenino, WA on April 1st 2012 and tentatively goal to open it for business on April 15th 2012. They will be opening under the name "The Old 99 Espresso & Diner"  with a full line of coffee beverages along with a limited menu with plans to rapidly evolve it into a full scale breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. All the items served will be available for inside consumption or quick and easy drive-thru  pickup.  Hope to see you all soon!
